The Women’s Wheel of Life

You find yourself in a forest. Sunlight streams through the trees, sending splashes of golden light to the ground. As you take in your surroundings, you hear the sound of wing beats above your head and look up in time to see a crow fly overhead. The crow calls out, its harsh voice imploring you to follow it deeper into the forest. You do so. After a while you come to what appears to be the mouth of a large cave. The crow lands on the top of the moss-covered opening and tilts its black head to one side to look down at you. It seems pleased that you have followed it here. The cave entrance is overgrown with vegetation, but as you examine it more closely you realize it is not a cave at all. You trace spiraling symbols carved into the stone and realize it was once the entrance to a massive building that now lies in ruins. On impulse you decide to step through the opening. On the other side you find yourself in a vast hall, brightly lit from torches hanging on the walls. On this side of the entrance the hall looks to be newly built! The spiraling designs you saw outside are carved along the walls on either side of you and your footsteps are softened on richly embroidered rugs that extend down the long hall to a dais, where a woman sits upon a large stone throne.

You did not notice her at first, but now you see she has been watching you very closely. The woman appears to be in her middle years, neither old nor young, but somewhere in between. She wears a finely made dress of the deepest blue, with a long purple mantle draped over her shoulders. Her posture exudes command and royalty, and you can see a thin golden circlet on her head. The throne she sits upon seems to be connected to the floor, as if it was carved from the rock of the earth and the hall was built around it. You can almost feel the deep hum of power flowing up from the earth beneath you, moving through the throne and into the woman. Beside the dais you see a basket of ripe wheat and another of freshly picked apples, harvest offerings left to the woman seated upon the throne.

You approach the dais, bowing before the woman, knowing you have encountered the Queen, the Goddess of Sovereignty. She smiles, pleased at your show of respect. “I am the Sovereign Queen, she who holds the mantle of
